The Vestavia Hills Board of Education meets the last Wednesday of each month for the regularly scheduled meeting at 6:00 p.m. in the board room unless otherwise noted.

Vestavia Hills Board Members

Kim Benos, President, worked for many years in the business sector as a pharmaceutical and medical device sales representative, winning national sales honors in both areas. She served as Director of Medical Management for Complete Health/United Health Care, and as a manager of operations, implementation, and marketing for a major medical software company. She received her undergraduate degree in Science and Nursing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1986, and then worked for three years on a pediatric oncology ward at The Children's Hospital in Birmingham. She earned an MBA from UAB in 1996 and a Masters degree in Theological Studies from Spring Hill College in 2003. Benos has been an active community volunteer. She served as Corresponding Secretary for the Vestavia Hills PTA Council and as President for the Vestavia Hills Elementary East PTA. She is a graduate of Leadership Vestavia Hills, and served on the board of directors of that organization, including one year as president. Kim also served as a logistics coordinator for Leadership Birmingham. Her community involvement extended to the Vestavia Hills Beautification Board, the Birmingham Ballet Committee, and the Vestavia Hills Mayor's Education Committee. She also served on the Executive Board of the Junior League of Birmingham as Community Vice-President and a member of the Junior League's Governance Committee and a second term as the Planning Vice-President. Kim's past community involvement included serving as President of the Little Rebel Cheerleading Board, a board member of both the Vestavia Hills City Schools Foundation and the Children's Literary Guild. Benos has two daughters, Kaitie and Emilee, who attend Vestavia Hills schools, and the three attend Church of the Highlands.  Benos was named Vestavia Hills Citizen of the Year in 2006. Jerry Dent, Vice-President, is a Managing Director with Alvarez & Marsal where he specializes in real estate advisory and environmental economics consulting. He holds a B.S. in Corporate Finance from the University of Alabama and received an M.B.A. from the University of Mississippi. Jerry serves on the Mayor's Financial Advisory Committee, Salvation Army Youth Services Council, and was honored as a member of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society - Alabama Leadership Class 2009 and the Birmingham Business Journal's Top 40 Under Forty in 2008. He is a member of the Kiwanis Club of Birmingham and serves as an MBA Program Mentor to graduate business students at Rice University and the University of Mississippi. Jerry has previously volunteered for United Way, Salvation Army, and Goodwill. He is a member of and holds various designations with several professional organizations including: Counselors of Real Estate, Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and American Society of Appraisers. Jerry and his wife, Veronica, have two daughters, Anna Grace and Mary Claire, who are enrolled in Vestavia Hills schools. They attend church at the Cathedral of St. Paul in Birmingham. Kym Prewitt is the founder of the Children's Literacy Guild of Alabama, a nonprofit service organization supporting Better Basics, Inc. and designed to fight against illiteracy. She also works with her family owned and operated business, Haas Fabrics, Inc. Kym is a graduate of the Vestavia Hills school system and Auburn University where she earned a B.S. degree in secondary education majoring in language arts. She formerly taught English in the Vestavia Hills system before becoming involved in the community by serving as vice president of the Vestavia Hills City Schools Foundation, president of the Vestavia Hills PTA and PTO Councils, board member of Leadership Vestavia Hills, and co-chairman of Youth Leadership Vestavia Hills. Kym is also involved in education work statewide by serving on the Executive Committee of the Governor's Commission on Quality Teaching, as a member of the Governor's Congress on School Leadership, chairmen of both of Governor Riley's Reading Summits, co-chair of the A+ Education Partnership Council, and member of both the Alabama State Reading Leadership Team and the State Textbook Committee. She is a past president of the Jefferson County Auburn Club and past member of the Board of Directors of the Auburn University National Alumni Association and currently serves on the Auburn University College of Education's National Advisory Council. She is a frequent speaker on the topic of literacy and has received service and leadership awards from Auburn University, the Literacy Council of Alabama, Better Basics, Inc., Childcare Resources Center, and the Alabama Association of Professional Fundraisers. Kym and her husband Johnny have three children, Jack, Addie and Billy, in the Vestavia Hills school system and the family attends Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church. Nathaniel H. Robin, MD, is a Professor in the Departments of Genetics and Pediatrics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He is a native of New York, graduated summa cum laude from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine ('85), and Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, New York ('89). He completed his medical training in both Pediatrics and Medical Genetics. In addition to his clinical duties, Dr Robin is an active teacher at all levels of medical education, and has won a number of awards as an educator. He was a leader in the recent curriculum overhaul at the School of Medicine, and serves on several national medical education committees. His wife, Laurie Marzullo, MD, is a Pediatric Emergency Medicine physician at The Children's Hospital of Alabama. Mark Hogewood is a lawyer with Wallace, Jordan, Ratliff and Brandt. His practice is primarily in the area of civil litigation with emphasis on corporate and insurance defense, as well as insurance coverage litigation. Mark is an adjunct professor of insurance law at Cumberland School of Law at Samford University. He has served on the State Bar's Task Force on Adult Literacy and on the Birmingham Bar Association's Public Service Committee. Mark attended Wake Forest University where he was selected for membership in Omicron Delta Kappa honorary and served on the Student Judicial Board. He graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in politics in 1990. He then attended Vanderbilt University School of Law and graduated in 1993. Mark was a member of the board of directors for Restoration Academy from 2005 - 2009. He is an elder at Covenant Presbyterian Church. He is currently the president of the Birmingham chapter of the Christian Legal Society. Mark served on the board of directors for the Vestavia Hills Soccer Club and was a member of Leadership Vestavia Hills Class of 2003.
