7/15/14 - VHCS Hires Meredith Hanson

Meredith Hanson Returns To Vestavia

Meredith Hanson hired as Vestavia Hills assistant superintendent
July 7, 2014 (VHCS) – In a special meeting this morning, the Vestavia Hills Board of Education approved the hiring of Meredith Hanson as the district’s new assistant superintendent.
Hanson, who is currently Executive Director of Human Resources at Auburn City Schools, previously served from 2006 to 2012 as assistant principal at Vestavia Hills Elementary Central. During that time, she assisted in oversight of the school’s 680 students and the hiring of more than 80 school staff members. She holds an Educational Specialist degree from Samford University.
Hanson will replace Sheila Phillips, who last month was named as the district’s new superintendent.
“Meredith’s wealth of knowledge gained from her experience here and outside of our district, coupled with her confident personality, made her the ideal candidate for this position,” Phillips said following this morning’s board meeting.
“I’m extremely humbled by this opportunity and very excited about what I know Mrs. Phillips has in mind for Vestavia Hills,” Hanson said by telephone from Auburn earlier today. “I’m looking forward to coming back and working for the kids, because they’re great students.”

5/29/14 - Sheila Phillips Named Next Superintendent

Superintendent Named for VHCS

The Vestavia Hills Board of Education unanimously approved Sheila Phillips as its next superintendent. Phillips will become the 6th superintendent of Vestavia Hills City Schools following the retirement of Dr. Jamie Blair next year. Phillips has been Vestavia Hills’ assistant superintendent since May 2012. She led a district-wide accreditation process earlier this year that laid the foundation for the system’s future. She will lead the upcoming development of a new strategic plan for school improvement, which will be a collective vision of stakeholders throughout Vestavia Hills. Phillips was assistant principal at Vestavia Hills High School during the 2011-12 academic year. Her résumé includes three years as principal and three years as assistant principal at Cullman High School. She spent more than 15 years of her career working with students in special education programs at Cullman, Homewood and Childersburg schools. “The board is confident that our thorough and fair process has resulted in the best decision for our district,” Vestavia Hills Board of Education president, Kym Prewitt, said earlier this evening. “Mrs. Phillips has already established positive and meaningful relationships with many stakeholders, and she has a deep understanding of our culture and our needs as a system. We welcome her to this new position and look forward to improving our standard of excellence in every area for our students.”

5/21/14 - Summer Reading

Make Time To READ!

A Note from Mrs. Johnson (VHEW Librarian)

Parents and Teachers,

Here are some of my favorites for summer reading… take a look at some of reading list and summer reading programs that are out there.  There are several freebies and some really good book lists and movie connections.

Don't let the summer slide (reading regression) happen at your house.  Set a schedule this summer for daily reading and set times to visit the library each week.  I encourage students to read in the mornings before the rush of the day begins, or to read while younger siblings nap.  Make it a habit, reading is something you won't regret

Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge Book Lists- great resource for fresh and some newer titles- http://www.scholastic.com/teachers/collection/keep-kids-reading-all-summer-long

Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Program- read 8 books and take the B&N "Reading Journal" to Barnes & Noble for a free book (see list and print off to participate)- http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/summer-reading/379003570

Bookit by Pizza Hut is another favorite and it has a classic list and a movie list- look under teacher resources for this book list- but the parent resources have some calendars and other items available.   You can also participate in their summer reading challenge or try out some of the books/movie connections.  You  can do that online- http://www.bookitprogram.com/summer/default.asp

Don't forget about Library in the Forest Summer Reading "Boom, Fizz, Read"!- their program begins June 1st.  Sign up and lets win some free books for our school with having the most participation for the 2nd year in a row!!!  http://www.vestavialibrary.org/kids/summerReading.php

3/07/14 - Tax Renewal Information

TAX RENEWAL VOTE YES!

Tax Renewal Votes needed on March 11,2014

 I. This is not a new tax.

  1. This is a renewal of an existing 10.5 mill tax that was approved by the citizens of Vestavia Hills in 1990.
  2. The existing tax is due to expire in 2017.

II. Renewal of this existing tax is essential for the system to continue to provide quality schools and a world class education for our children.

  1. The exisitng tax represents 20% of our local revenue.
  2. The existing tax represents 11% of the system's general fund revenue.
  3. These percentages equate to $6.3 million of annual revenue:
    1. $6.3 million equates to 84 teacher units
    2. $6.3 million equates to 20% of the teachers in our system

III. Loss of the 10.5 mill revenue will reduce our per pupil spending by $996 per student. Negative impact might include:

  1. Larger class sizes
  2. Elimination of programs (curricular and extra-curricular)
  3. Obsolete technology
  4. Deteriorating facilities
  5. Insufficient cash reserves

IV. Approval of this vital existing educational tax will NOT result in any new taxes.

  1. Renewal will continue an important source of school revenue.
  2. Our students and community have benefitted from this existing tax for the past 23 years.

10/31/13 - VHEW Welcomes Bo and Mike Royer

Acceptance and Loving Others

VHEW welcomed Bo the dog and Mike Royer from Alabama's 13 WVTM-TV to Mrs. Burns' second grade class on Monday, October 28th while Dawn Norris, the guidance counselor, read a book "I Can Play Too" written by Ms. Martin, the PE teacher, at VHEW and owner of Bo. The book was a children's picture book about being different and not being acccepted by others because of one's difference, or in this case, Bo's different appearance. Bo only has 3 legs and struggles a bit when he walks so it is very visible that he is different from other dogs. Mrs. Norris called Mike Royer about the lesson and he agreed to come and film the lesson and meet Bo for his segment, The Spirit of Alabama. It will be aired soon on WVTM-TV.

Below is the article Mrs. Norris will send out to parents at VHEW.

9/16/13 - National Night Out

Mark Your Calendar!

Mark your Calendar!!!!

Attached is Vestavia Hills’ community flyer for this year’s National Night Out.  This year’s event will be with our community partners at the Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church on 10/1/13, from 6:00-8:30pm.  National Night Out  is celebrating its’ 30th
year as an event that promotes public safety’s partnership with the community it serves.  The event is symbolic in nature and offers a great opportunity for a night of free family fun as well a chance for citizens to see public safety apparatus, equipment and technology up close and personal.  We encourage everyone to take advantage of this opportunity to get to know some of your public servants and the services we offer.

Engrained within National Night is the challenge for public safety to launch “Project 365”.   This year’s Project 365 is entitled “Operation Blue Shield”.  The concept behind Operation Blue Shield is to combat distracted driving, promoting our Collision Avoidance Training (CAT) program for teen drivers and remind everyone that whether in the case of preventing an accident or a traffic citation…..”You can prevent blue lights”.  We hope to partner with several local vendors that have a similar initiatives and afford them an opportunity to get the word out in hopes of making our roadways a little more safe.

VHPD would like to extend their sincere appreciation to our committee members and primary sponsors: The Vestavia Hills Rotarian Clubs, Two Men and a Truck, The Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church & Target.

8/22/13 - Student Lunch Accounts

Student Lunch Accounts

Meal money will be collected daily by the teacher and sent to the cafeteria where it will be entered into an individual meal account for each student. Any amount can be deposited into your child’s account. Any money sent to the cafeteria after 8:30 AM may not be posted to the student’s account until the following day. Please write the student’s meal account ID Number and Name on all payments.

Please maintain an adequate amount of money in your child’s meal account.

Maintaining money in the meal account helps us to better utilize our time and talent resources to prepare nutritious meals for students rather than concentrating on bookkeeping and accounting details dealing with money collection.

As a service to parents and students, each cafeteria automatically opens a “Debit” account for students when they are enrolled in school. Parents are highly encouraged to make use of this account by periodically depositing money in the account for children to purchase lunches, milk and a-la-carte items in the cafeteria. Each student is issued a Lunch ID# that is used each time a purchase is made in the cafeteria. BALANCES IN THESE ACCOUNTS SHOULD BE POSITIVE OR ZERO at all times.

 Payment Information:

In the interest of providing families with the most convenient and easy options for meal payment, www.paypams.com is available. There is also a free downloadable PayPams app for smartphone users.

In order to set up an account on PayPams, you must have your child’s lunch ID#.

Below are some of the benefits of using PayPams:

•Set up automatic recurring payments

•Automatically add money to a student’s or employee’s account when the balance runs low

•Low balance email notifications

•Ability to view purchases and spending habits

Payment Methods:

There are various ways to have money put into your child’s lunch account. To ensure that your child’s account is credited properly, please indicate your child’s name and lunch ID# with all payments.

You may add money to your child’s lunch account using the following methods:

•Online using PayPams account (there is a small service charge when money is added to the account.)

•Cash to school in a sealed envelope with child’s name and lunch number written on it.

•Check to school with child’s name and lunch number written on it.

Student Charging Policies:

Students will be allowed to charge up to three lunches. The Cafeteria Manager will send notices home DAILY for collection of charges for all negative lunch accounts. (Weekly notices will be sent home to ALL students for general balance notifications.)  If payments are not received after the third lunch charge, the child MAY be provided an ALTERNATE lunch meal and not the meal listed on the menu for that day.

Online meal payments:

Parents now have the option of using PayPams, an online meal payment and meal account monitoring program. Flyers with instruction for the use of PayPams are available at the school. The website address is www.PayPams.com. In order to set up an account, the student’s meal account number will be needed.

Charged Meal Policy:

Vestavia Hills City Schools Child Nutrition Program expects school meals to be paid for in an efficient manner by pre-payment or by paying during the meal service. it is the responsibility of the parent or guardian to pay for the meals a child purchases. However, in emergency situations, elementary students will be allowed to charge a maximum of three reimbursable meals. Students will not be allowed to charge any a la carte or extra items at any time.

Post-dated checks can not be accepted. All checks received will be deposited on the day received.

8/14/13 - Principal's Note

Kim Hauser Welcomes New Staff

A note from Kim Hauser, principal & Alicia Hunsberger, assistant principal

I am so excited to be the new principal of this fine school! The West Way is the Best Way! Our custodial staff, office staff and instructional technology specialist, Jan Garfinkle, have worked hard all summer readying the school to open the doors on August 19. Teachers reported back Monday, August 12 through Friday, August 16, so now we are ready and need the students! I want to welcome our new employees that are replacing our teachers that retired in May:

Alicia Hunsberger is our new assistant principal. As of July 1, she has hit the ground running. She comes to us from Mountain Brook with 12 years experience and National Board Certification. She is anxious to get to know everyone and work withstudents, teachers and parents.

Carla Johnson is the new librarian/media specialist. She comes from Shelby County with 12 years experience, and is super excited to be the new librarian. She, too, welcomes students and parents, and is anxious to know everyone and help meet any and all library needs.

Kelly Belew is the new Gifted Specialist. She comes most recently from Tuscaloosa, but has over 20 years experience working with gifted programs. Her experience and personality make her a great match for our school.

We are so excited to welcome the following classroom teachers who are fired up and ready for their class at West:

Lori Ambrose (2nd),

Mary Katherine Cooke (K)

Megan Johnson (K)

Suzanne Church, a former 5th grade teacher at VHEC, will join our exceptional ed staff as a para educator.

Andy Kimbrell, a Vestavia Hills City police officer, will be our assigned Student Resource Officer (SRO). He will be a part of our faculty and staff every day.

This summer, all our other teachers have spent many professional development (PD) hours at the Board of Education attending PD sessions, as well as site-based PD at VHEW. A tremendous attribute of our fine faculty is the desire for continuous learning tobenefit our students!

A huge shout out to our FABULOUS and SUPPORTIVE PTO - Melissa Kaiser and many others: Mindy Tarrant and her registration committee helped our twoday on-site registration process run smoothly. Huge thanks to Marti Register, Alissa Padgett and the hospitality committee for a welcome back to school luncheon during our busy PD week, and to Cinnamon McCulley for newsletter production.

We have the best PTO, and all efforts are so greatly appreciated!! We would not be the school we are without such great parent support.

Please know Alicia and I are both so excited for the upcoming school year. We are always here for you.

We look forward to seeing parents on Parent Orientation on Thursday, August 22:

K & 1st grades: 5:30-6:15 p.m./2nd

and 3rd grades: 6:30-7:15 p.m.

VHEW Gets an ActivTable

Vestavia Hills Elementary West is excited to have the FIRST Promethean ActivTable in the district and state of Alabama. A special "thank you" to our PTO for the purchase of the ActivTable. It features a large, touch-sensitive screen with ample room for collaboration. It has available over 70 interactive activities built in to the table with many more activities available soon through Promethean Planet. The ActivTable empowers and motivates students to lead their own learning, driving engagement, consensus decision making and classroom collaboration. This multi-user interactive table allows up to six learners to simultaneously use individual tools, web browsers and resources as their personal efforts move the group toward accomplishing a common goal. All ActivTable activities are aligned with US national standards and many can be modified by teachers to suit their learning objectives. Not only is the ActivTable a uniquely powerful tool for learning through small-group collaboration, but it is also a vehicle for building essential 21st century skills such as communication, creativity and critical thinking. The ActivTable will be housed in the Computer Lab at VHEW in the fall with access to all students in the school every week during their computer lab time. VHEW is so excited to bring this form of technology to our students for the 2013-14 school year. Again "THANK YOU PTO"!

12/20/12 - Message From Dr. Blair

Vestavia Hills City Schools Security

It is the goal of the Vestavia Hills City Schools to provide our children with a world-class education.  However, before children can learn, they must feel safe.  Their parents want to know that their children are safe.  The Vestavia Hills Board of Education and the City of Vestavia Hills want to provide the safest public school environment possible.  Therefore, a number of steps are being actively pursued by the Vestavia Hills Board of Education and by the City of Vestavia Hills to significantly upgrade security in all Vestavia Hills schools.  While I cannot yet give any of the details of these measures until they have been finalized and approved by the necessary officials, I can say they are substantial and go far beyond anything that we currently have in place.  These steps are sensible and appropriate and will enable everyone to have a much higher sense of safety without compromising our positive learning environment.  The timeline for implementation of these measures is very short.  We plan to have all approvals in place and implementation underway by the end of February of 2013.  Some measures will be in place when students return to school on January 7, 2013.  At the appropriate time, we will provide additional information regarding these plans.  Of course, some of these measures will remain confidential.  We cannot show our hand completely to anyone out there who may be planning to do harm.

The safety of our children and staff members is of the utmost importance to us.  Providing peace of mind to our parents that their children are in the safest public learning environments possible is important to us.  We will see to it that these things are done.  Have a very happy and peaceful holiday!

Jamie Blair, Superintendent, Vestavia Hills City Schools

12/17/12 - Home For Christmas:Marine Surprises His Kids at VHEW

Special Surprise At VHEW

Monday morning two students at West got a big surprise. Carter and Anna Lane got an unexpected visit from their dad, Major Derek Lane, who is a Marine and has been stationed in Kuwait since July. Major Lane visited Lake, a fourth grader at Central, first. Then he came to West. He visited Carter in his third grade classroom. Then he went to Anna’s first grade classroom and surprised her. This was a very big surprise for his kids.

“I was surprised a lot,” Carter said. “This feels great,” Anna said.

The surprise made some of the teachers at West cry. They were happy this family will be together for Christmas.

Major Lane is a communications specialist in the Marines. “It feels good to come home early,” Major Lane said. “I missed my family a whole lot.”

Major Lane gets to stay home for Christmas. He goes back to Kuwait in January.

Major Lane said it took 16 hours for him to get home to see his family. He was in Kuwait six months without his family. Anna wanted him to read her class notes from people from his job. Her first grade class sent her daddy and his co-workers a care package earlier this year. Major Lane thanked the class for the goodies they sent and read letters to the class from some of the Marines who wrote to thank them.

No one in the Marines except for a few people get to spend Christmas with their families and the Lanes are very lucky their dad is one of those people.

12/17/12 - Secure Schools Message

From Dr. Jamie Blair

Vestavia Hills City Schools extend our condolences to the Sandy Hook Elementary community in Connecticut.  The unthinkable occurred last Friday morning, and we all mourn the loss of the students, teachers, and administrator. We hugged our own children a bit tighter this last weekend.

Vestavia Hills City Schools have continually bolstered security measures at all the district’s schools since 2000, and we have trained educators on how to respond to crises on campus. Every school practices crisis drills and evacuation procedures on a regular basis.

At each VHCS campus, the first person a visitor greets is a school receptionist or a parent volunteer stationed just inside the main entrance.  That person manages a sign-in sheet, issues a visitor’s pass, and inquires about the visitor’s purpose for being on campus.

Five school resource officers work at district schools, in coordination with the Vestavia Hills City police. The district’s crisis management plan has been developed and reviewed with local, state, and national law enforcement agencies. Both theStrategic Plans of 2007-2012 and 2012-2015 have directed the district to continue adding state-of-the-art security measures to our schools, such as surveillance cameras and more secure doors.

Student safety is of the utmost importance to the school system.  Our schools remain a safe place for students to be.

----Dr. Jamie Blair, Superintendent, Vestavia Hills City Schools

5/22/12 - Summer Reading

Take Time To READ!

Summer break is a great time for students to read independently and enthusiastically.  The district offers suggested summer reading, but it is a wonderful time for children to self-select books of interest to them.

Research shows that reading as few as 4 books (middle school and high school students) to 12 books (elementary school students) in a summer can help a student maintain their reading skills.  Of course, many of our students read far more than 4-12 when their schedules allow.

The Vestavia Public Library welcomes our students in the summer.  Please visit with your child and find some new favorite titles !

This link directs you to the suggested grade level titles our teachers put together a few summers ago.

Library News

Thank you parents, teachers, and students for your super support of the annual Book Fair. The Book Fair was a success and we hope you are enjoying your new books!  Special appreciation goes to Linda Pierre, and all book fair volunteers who assisted the children, parents, and teachers in selecting their favorite books.

Several interactive flipcharts were used with library groups to honor the traditions related to the annual celebrations of Groundhog Day and Valentines Day. In honor of our American presidents, students researched a president using resources from the Alabama Virtual Library, White House for Kids, and Bookflix. They used printed resources on our Presidents and reviewed text features. In the second and third grade, we discussed the importance of “using our own words in writing reports”, and taking notes.

Our school library participated in the 2012 Read Across America Celebration honoring The Lorax. The theme was “Read with the Trees” The Cat visited all of the classrooms on March 2.

Books were donated to our library from the Jefferson County Retirees Association of Alabama.

2/04/12 - Inside VHEW

New Magazine: Inside VHEW

Vestavia Hills Elementary West and The Writing Committee at VHEW is pleased to announce VHEW's first-ever Journalism Staff. It will consist of: News Editors, Sports Editors, Fine Arts Editors, Photography Editors, Comic Strip Editors, and Advice Column Editor.

Dozens of third graders applied to serve on the journalism staff. The Writing Committee had a very difficult time narrowing down the 12 candidates to serve as editors and publish the new online school magazine, Inside VHEW (pronounced "view"). The staff met and named the magazine themselves. After a lively discussion, they voted to have a school magazine rather than a newspaper. As one student said, "EVERYONE has a newspaper. We would be the only school with a magazine."

The journalism staff will meet each Tuesday from 2:30-3:30 to interview, write, edit and publish the magazine. Twenty additional third graders were selected to serve as correspondents for the magazine. They will contribute stories, photographs, art, etc. It will then be published on the VHEW website under Classes and "Inside VHEW".

Any VHEW faculty/staff and student will have the opportunity to submit an article, photo, comic strip, etc.

This endeavor is funded by a Vestavia Hills City Schools Foundation Grant.

VHEW is so excited about this opportunity for our students!

Samford athletics has partnered with Vestavia Elementary West for the 2011-12 school year. Samford student-athletes are working with small groups of children throughout the school year.

“Our teachers and students have raved about how polite, smart, helpful and kind the student-athletes are,” Reading Coach Lorie Johnson said. “It is a delight to have them read and play math games with our students. It means so much to the children at West and has made a tremendous impact. We are so grateful that these student-athletes are so graciously and generously taking time in their very busy schedules to make a difference in the lives of our students. Their enthusiasm is contagious! They have inspired our students to work harder, read longer and reach higher in the classroom.”

In all, 34 Samford student-athletes have volunteered so far this year. The athletes have read with small groups, played language games on specific topics, worked on telling time using mini-clocks, worked on other math concepts using manipulatives and helped with a large group activity as they collected data by creating glyphs in math.

“I love volunteering with a second grade class at Vestavia West,” women’s tennis player Lindsey Mallory said. “The teachers and kids are so energetic and love student-athletes coming to their classes and establishing relationships with them.

2/01/11 - Pitch In for Education February 7-11

Kids Pitch In Feb. 7-11

February 7-11, students at VHEW will be participating in the 2nd Annual Pitch In for Education campaign benefitting the Vestavia Hills City Schools Foundation. The Pitch In for Education campaign provides an opportunity for students to make a contribution to the Foundation’s Education Endowment. By “Pitching In” loose change or bills, Vestavia Hills students will help grow the endowment that provides a source of funding to their school system. All the change that is collected becomes part of the VHCSF permanent endowment. Last year Vestavia Hills students pitched in over $22,000!

How can YOU “Pitch In”?

You can make a HUGE difference by Pitching In your change or bills for the Vestavia Hills City Schools Foundation. Thanks to iBERIABANK, all K-5 students will receive a Pitch In for Education bank. This bank is a great way to remind students the importance of saving and investing in the Foundation. Use your Pitch In bank at home to collect your change and bills, then

bring your donation to the Pitch In bucket in your classroom — see how quickly your classroom bucket can fill up! The class in each school that contributes the most will win a Bruster’s Real Ice Cream Party and the teacher will win a $50 classroom grant!

You can also Pitch In for Education at participating Vestavia Hills businesses. The Vestavia Hills City Schools Foundation and the Vestavia Hills Chamber of Commerce have partnered together to encourage ALL Vestavia Hills residents to support the Foundation. Look for the Pitch In buckets at participating merchants and be sure to thank them for supporting the children

in our community. Please visit www.vestaviafoundation.org  for participating merchants.

Parents! - Use this as an opportunity to send in your pledge payment or make a new pledge. All payments made during the campaign go towards your child’s classroom total! Visit www.vestaviafoundation.org to print a pledge card or we accept PayPal. If you have never made a gift to the Foundation we hope you’ll join us now. VHCSF is a 501(c)3, so your gift is tax deductible.

10/20/10 - VHEW Book Drive

Book Drive At West

Kristin Werner's third-grade class at Vestavia Hills Elementary West successfully conducted a book drive to benefit Better Basics, an organization that works directly with students in public literacy programs.  In order to become a better reader, one must read often.  Because of this important fact, Werner's Learners decided to help students who need more books at home.  The class created flyers and accepted donated books each morning.  Students at Vestavia West who gave two or more books got to take one "new to them" book home.  The remaining books were contributed to Better Basics.  The student-led drive collected almost 1,000 books to the worthwhile organization.

7/23/14 - Online Student Directory

Online Student Directory Available

This year, we are using a new online directory system (Circlebox).  With your Summer online school pre-registration, you can sign-up by going to:

http://www.circlebox.com/vhpto

In addition to being able to enter your student’s contact information as it will appear in the online and printed directories, some Vestavia schools are utilizing this tool  to let you easily volunteer for PTO committees and to provide important school-specific information.

  • There is no charge to use this service.
  • The information is secure & only available to families of students in the Vestavia School System
  • The directory search functionality will be available once school year begins as homeroom classrooms are assigned.

Here’s how it will work:

  1. If you don’t already have a Circlebox account, you will be prompted to create one. (Some households will already have an account as a member of another organization that already uses Circlebox.)  All students in your household should be set up under your one Circlebox account.
  2. In addition to your student data, you may also list (2) two points of contact (parents/guardians) for each household.  Both contacts (parents/guardians) will be able to access your household account for searches and updates.
  3. In addition to your directory information, please also complete the brief school specific questionnaire and the PTO volunteer form for each student/school where applicable.
  4. Once you enter your student’s information, that record will be “pending” until teacher assignments are entered.  Once the student entry is updated with the homeroom class assignment, (by PTO staff after the 1st day of school) your account will become “active” for Vestavia District-wide search.

For Questions, Contact:  helpdesk@circlebox.com

2/06/14 - TAX RENEWAL VOTE YES!

March 11, 2014

The maximum size of a team is 15, and we have 13!

One girl put it this way, "I learned that I am the boss of my brain."

Hopefully, we will also have a spring team so a new group of girls can enjoy the GOTR experience.

2.    All over-the-counter medications brought in for administration at school must be in an UNOPENED, ORIGINAL container.
Hope this information will help as you plan for next school year.
