Dr. Mark Richardson

Mark Richardson has served as Principal at Vestavia Hills Elementary East since the 1999-2000 school year and feels completely blessed to be here! He started his career as a fifth grade teacher at Vestavia Hills Elementary Central, where he taught for seven years before working as Assistant Principal at Chelsea Elementary for two years. Mark has served in public education since 1990. He earned a BA in Journalism from the University of Alabama, a MA in Education from Auburn University in Montgomery, and an EdS and EdD from Samford University.  He is married to Jennice, and has two children, Alex and Katie, both products of Vestavia Hills City Schools.

Since arriving at Vestavia Hills Elementary East, Mark has strived to maintain a very positive culture and to emphasize character-building, with the Golden Rule taught as the school motto. In 2013, the Character Education Partnership recognized East as Alabama’s first State School of Character, as well as one of only 29 schools nationwide to receive the National School of Character distinction.

The school’s vision statement is, “Every Vestavia Hills Elementary East student will learn to his/her potential in a safe environment, while experiencing happiness through social growth at school.” Mark believes in order for learning to be effective, constant professional learning among staff must take place, and students must be regularly engaged in learning, which also contributes to their happiness at school.
