Degrees and Certifications:
Dr. Chris Pennington
Hello, my name is Dr. Chris Pennington, and I am excited to be a part of the Pizitz Middle School family! I grew up in Oneonta, Alabama and graduated from Oneonta High School in 1985. I chose to major in instrumental music education at Jacksonville State University and finished my Bachelor of Science degree as a student assistant at The University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1990. I received my Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Liberty University, my Masters in Music Education degree from Auburn University, administrative certification from The University of Alabama, and my Educational Specialist degree from Lincoln Memorial University.
I have been in education for 30 years, of which 22 were as a band director at Susan Moore H.S. Hazel Green H.S., and Oxford H.S. I have been in administration for the last 11 years, with the first four serving as an administrative assistant/fine arts supervisor at Oxford H.S., one year as the building administrator at Luverne Elementary, three years as assistant principal at Athens Middle School (and fine arts director for the system), and three years as high school/middle school principal at Chickasaw H.S., in Mobile, Alabama.
My focus as an educator and administrator has always been the development of the whole student. These needs are constantly changing, which requires an open-minded approach to what is necessary for academic and emotional intelligence development. I believe, however, that the foundation for development of a student remains the same: Growth mindset/life-long learner, exposure to innovative opportunities, attention to character and leadership, artistry and abstract thinking, organizational skills/time management, stress management education, and making time for socialization and recreational/physical activities.
I have been married to my wife, Cheryl, for 31 years. We have three children (Emily, Alan, and Sarah), two grandchildren (Emma and Nora) and three dogs (Daisy, Max, and Minnie). I am a big Marvel Comics fan, military vehicle/craft enthusiast, Sci-Fi fan, and an automobile enthusiast. I enjoy my extra time playing golf, playing my trombone, and spending time with my family.
