One of our goals at Vestavia Hills Elementary Central is to develop lifelong readers and writers. As students strive to become more skillful readers in the intermediate grades, they struggle with more difficult nonfiction in all curriculum areas and learn to dig deeper into the meaning of their fictional texts. Student growth in reading and writing go hand-in-hand. At VHEC, teachers teach the writing process using the structure of the writing workshop. Students who are able to create narrative, informative, and persuasive texts also develop their ability to “get inside” the writing of published authors.
