Board of Education December Recognitions

December 18, 2018 — The Vestavia Hills Board of Education on Monday recognized several students and one community volunteer for their achievements.

Individuals receiving recognition during the December Board of Education meeting included:

  • Eleven Vestavia Hills High School students who were named National Merit Semifinalists earlier this fall. VHHS is home this year to the third-highest number of National Merit Semifinalists in Alabama. The students were named among just 16,000 Semifinalists nationwide, representing less than 1 percent of all students who took the National Merit Qualifying Test. National Merit Semifinalists are Colin Bamford, Rachel Bates, Cross Hogland, Bryce Hutchinson, Alison Levine, Nicholas Muscolino, Lauren Nelson, Sydney Nelson, Ritika Samant, Julia Stewart, and Walter Zhang.
  • Frank Hernandez, who was recently honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award from Leadership Vestavia Hills. Frank is a Vice President at Regions, a resident of Liberty Park, and has served as Vice President of Communications for both Liberty Park PTOs. He has also served on the VHHS Band Boosters Association and has organized and managed the volunteer efforts in the concession stands. Over the past three years, Mr. Hernandez worked to revamp the concession stand fundraisers to increase sales, service and partnerships with Vestavia Hills businesses.
  • Ethan Strand, who was the individual state champion at the boys’ 7A cross country state meet in November. Strand crossed the finish line in 15 minutes and 24.29 seconds. The VHHS boys’ cross country team finished second overall at the meet.
