Board of Education recognizes spring VHHS championships

May 21, 2019 -- The Vestavia Hills Board of Education Monday night recognized numerous VHHS students and teams for winning state and national championships this spring.

Recognitions included:

Ethan Strand

Ethan Strand, a Vestavia Hills High School sophomore, swept the 7A distance races at the state track meet in Gulf Shores earlier this month. Strand won the 1,600 meters in 4 minutes and 18 seconds; won the 3,200 meters in 9 minutes and 21 seconds; and won the 800 meters in 1 minute and 54 seconds.

JV Cheerleaders

In just their second year of competition, the Vestavia Hills High School Junior Varsity Cheerleaders this year won a national championship in cheerleading. The team won the AHSAA North Regional JV Championship in November before moving on to the UCA South Regional Championship and winning there. The win qualified them to compete in the National High School Cheerleading Championships in Orlando this spring. The team had a successful routine and were crowned JV Gameday National Champions, defending their title they won there in 2018.

Girls’ Soccer Team

The Vestavia Hills High School girls soccer team repeated as 7A state champions this year and finished the season with a perfect 23-0 record. The team defeated McGill-Toolen 2-0 on Saturday, May 11 to clinch the title and the program’s sixth state championship overall. The team also finished the season ranked first in the nation by MaxPreps and earned head coach Brigid Meadow her 300th career victory during the season.

Boys' Tennis Team

The Vestavia Hills High School boys tennis team needed everything to break its way into the doubles finals. The Rebels had a pair in the No. 2 and No. 3 brackets and won both of those finals. But, they had to have a Fairhope victory over Huntsville in the No. 1 bracket to earn the program’s first state title since 2014. Fairhope dropped the first set before rallying to claim the final two sets and earn the match victory, giving Vestavia Hills the Class 7A state championship on April 23 at the Jimmy Johns Tennis Complex in Decatur.

Austin Coggin

Austin Coggin, a Vestavia Hills High School senior, had the top 7A round at the boys’ golf state championships in Prattville earlier this month. Coggin finished the second day of competition with a 4-under-par 68 to earn low medalist honors with a 5-under-par 139 total over both rounds at the Robert Trent Jones Capitol Hill golf course. The VHHS team finished third in the state.

We the People Team

Vestavia Hills High School represented the sixth congressional district at the We the People competition and won the state championship. VHHS competed against teams from three other congressional districts to win the championship. VHHS won all six units to take the championship. The team went on to compete in the National Finals in Washington in April and won the Southeastern States Regional Award.
