Hello! I’m Todd Freeman, Superintendent of Vestavia Hills City Schools. In this video, I’ll share with you updates on construction at the new Pizitz Middle School campus, school start times for next year, and work on our strategic plan.

We’re excited to be nearing completion of work on the new Pizitz Middle School campus. Currently, there are three separate projects in the later stages of construction. The first project includes the renovation of the existing building along with new construction of spaces for band, choir, and athletics. The second project is adding turn lanes from Columbiana Drive onto the campus. The third project is the addition of a new artificial turf softball field and a natural grass baseball field.

We’re anticipating all of the work to be completed in January which will give us ample time to prepare the campus for students to attend there next school year. Throughout the spring, you’ll be hearing more about the new Pizitz Middle School as we prepare for a grand opening in August, 2020.

Start times for next school year will have one change based on our review of traffic patterns. Beginning in August, 2020, the Freshman Campus will begin at 8:10 AM, and Vestavia Hills High School will begin at 8:20 AM. Both Middle Schools will continue to start the day at 8:00 and elementary schools at 7:45.

Our new strategic plan goals are in place, and schools are working tirelessly toward our mission of providing each student the opportunity to learn without limits. This semester, we’ve begun designing ways to best reach our goals. One example is the group of community stakeholders who met in October to consider how our system can best support the mental health of our students. Their rich conversation provided great vision and opportunities for our system to consider in short- and long-term planning.

Throughout the system, administrators, teachers, and counselors are engaged in professional learning focused on the social and emotional support needed by our students. I’m so pleased with the intentional efforts throughout our system in this goal. We’ll give a comprehensive update of Goal 2 during our December 16 Board meeting.

In this season of thanksgiving, I want to express my genuine appreciation for your unparalleled support of our school system. This semester has affirmed to me the commitment of our community in providing the very best opportunities for our students. We live, work, and attend school in this special place called Vestavia Hills. For this, we are abundantly blessed!
