September 29, 2020 -- The Vestavia Hills Board of Education recognized several teachers and students during its Monday meeting:
Amy Maddox and Laura Casey - AP with WE Service
17 Vestavia Hills High School seniors completed the AP with WE Service program in the early spring of 2020. This new program combined college-level learning from the Advanced Placement program with the service learning model of WE.org, an organization supporting domestic and international service and charity projects. The students worked with community and school events such as RISE, Step Up for Down Syndrome, Operation Christmas Child, and the Ronald McDonald House of Charities.
AP with WE Service students included:
Anabel Byars, Cecilia Kong, Emily Giles, Ethan Wavra, Hanna Sha, Jason Han, Julie Dixon, Khadija Malik, Kody Yang, Madeline Bunch, Max Velasco, Anushka Patel, Reid Smith, Samuel Smith, Ricky Dong, Ariel Zhou, and Alejandra Guadarrama-Mojica.
Faith Lenhart, Lisa Greer, Jennifer Brown, and Emily Bedgood - Rebels Helping Rebels
Several Vestavia Hills High School faculty members this year launched a community project entitled Rebels Helping Rebels. This project served to financially support other students in need by paying for fees related to school activities. The goal of the project was to ensure that cost would not be a barrier to any student participating in school programs, classes, clubs, and trips. Parents had the opportunity to contribute to the fund during the 2020-21 school registration process. The project raised more than $4,600 in its first year.
