Message from the Superintendent

August 6, 2021 -- Dear VHCS family,

Vestavia Hills City Schools will begin the school year on Tuesday, August 10. We have updated our plan for the start of school and encourage you to read it on our website. Please remember that the plan is subject to change.

I want to acknowledge the many families who have shared their perspectives, concerns, and suggestions for this school year with me. Each correspondence has affirmed that we all share the common bond of wanting the very best for our children. I also want to emphasize that VHCS will continually evaluate our attendance and health data along with all components of our instructional and operational plans and notify you promptly of any changes.

Our plan emphasizes the responsibilities of every family through the 4Habits 4Health as well as our focus on indoor air quality and routine cleaning and disinfecting practices. We have included some of the plan details below for your convenience.

4Habits 4Health

COVID-19 Vaccination

  • Every person age 12 and up is eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. VHCS encourages every person eligible to consider receiving the vaccine in consultation with their healthcare professional.
  • VHCS will comply with Alabama law 2021-293 (Vaccine Passport). The COVID-19 vaccine is not required to enroll in Vestavia Hills City Schools or participate in any school activities. Students/staff are not required to report their vaccination status to the school.

Close Contacts

Please read the full plan to learn how we will determine when students and staff must stay home. Note that there are exceptions to when a student would have to stay home after a close contact.

Attendance Dashboard

Each week beginning August 17, VHCS will publish data on student absences related to COVID-19 from the previous week. You can view the dashboard by clicking here.

Virtual Learning Option

VHCS is expanding the virtual learning option to include students in kindergarten through 5th grade. We are also providing students in 6th through 12th grade a second opportunity to sign up for the virtual learning option.

Virtual learning will be given through a provider that uses certified teachers and curriculum based on Alabama content standards. VHCS teachers will not be teaching virtual courses. Students who are enrolled in the virtual learning option will remain there through the end of the first semester. After the first semester, students can choose to continue in the virtual option or return to the traditional learning option. You can read more about the virtual and traditional learning options in our plan.

If you would like to enroll your student in the virtual learning option, please click here to complete the form by 8:00 a.m. on Monday, August 9, 2021. You will be contacted next week with next steps.

I wish you and your family all the best this school year.
