New Vestavia Hills High School head football coach named

Welcome Robert Evans

January 13, 2022 -- A Vestavia Hills High School alumnus is returning home to coach the Rebels.

In a called meeting this morning, the Vestavia Hills Board of Education approved Robert Evans as the school’s new head football coach.

Evans has served since 2018 as defensive coordinator at Mountain Brook High School. He previously served eight years as a linebackers coach and defensive coordinator at Hoover High School and spent time at Oak Mountain, Spanish Fort, and UAB.

Evans graduated from Vestavia Hills High School in 1999 and was a defensive back on Buddy Anderson’s 1998 state championship team. Vestavia Hills defeated C.F. Vigor 10-7 in the 1998 AHSAA 6A state championship game at Legion Field. Evans was named MVP of the game after breaking up a late pass from Vigor which sealed the victory for the Rebels.

Evans, who also played baseball under late Rebels coach Sammy Dunn, went on to play both sports at Samford University before signing a minor-league deal with the Boston Red Sox organization. He was inducted into Samford’s Baseball Hall of Fame in 2011.

Reached by phone today, Evans said he and his wife, Anne, were “thrilled to represent Vestavia Hills” and continue the legacy of the school’s storied football program.

“We will look to provide the same core values to our players that have been synonymous with Vestavia Hills football for decades: toughness, discipline, and humility. We will play a physical and innovative brand of football that this community can be proud of,” Evans said.

Vestavia Hills superintendent Todd Freeman, Ed.D., described Evans as “a man of character, a committed educator, and a brilliant football coach.

“He will lead our football program into the future with the integrity that has been the foundation of our program. We are thrilled to have Robert and his wife Anne on the Vestavia Hills team,” Freeman said today.

Vestavia Hills City Schools Director of Athletics, Myra Miles, lauded Evans’ leadership and coaching capabilities.

“To say I’m excited about Robert and Anne coming home to Vestavia Hills is an understatement. He was a phenomenal student-athlete in high school, and today he continues to be a man of high character and a fantastic coach. This is a great day for Vestavia Hills football,” Miles said.

A meet-and-greet event for Robert and Anne Evans will be held on Monday, Jan. 17 at 6 p.m. at Vestavia Hills High School. The event will take place in the school’s gymnasium and is open to the public.
