Superintendent's Weekly Update

Hello Vestavia Hills City Schools families,

The VHCS Health and Wellness Plan is available on our website and includes information about our core strategies that include 4Habits 4Health, building ventilation, and cleaning and disinfecting procedures. I appreciate our custodians, maintenance technicians, nutrition and transportation staff, and industry partners for their commitment to maintaining safe and healthy facilities.

Please remember to check your children for the symptoms of COVID-19 every day before arriving at school, and keep them home whenever they are sick. We ask that you notify us if your child tests positive by completing our Positive Reporting Form. As a parent and employee of VHCS, I’m grateful for our team of nurses and their commitment to the health and overall wellbeing of our students.

You can view the total number of students and staff absent each week for a positive case of COVID-19 by visiting the ADPH K-12 COVID-19 Dashboard. For students who are absent, our teachers are providing lesson plans through their Week-at-a-Glance and/or Google Classroom. These lessons are important opportunities for students to continue learning while they are away from school. I know that you join me in expressing appreciation to all VHCS teachers, staff, and substitutes for their efforts in our classrooms this month.

Based on a review of our absence data this past Friday, we made the decision to send a potential exposure letter to every family to create heightened awareness. Schools will continue to send regular exposure letters in the same way we have used all year. After receiving a letter, please monitor your student for symptoms of COVID-19 for ten days. Students whose families receive a potential exposure letter may remain in school as long as they do not have COVID-19 symptoms or test positive. Absences for exposure or other COVID-related reasons are excused.

Finally, I want to emphasize the importance of considering the COVID-19 vaccine for your children in consultation with your family healthcare provider

Thank you for the unparalleled support you continue to give to our teachers and staff.

Sincerely,

Todd Freeman, Ed.D.
